Electrify Stories - Heat Pump Water Heaters

Hear from people who have replaced their gas water heaters with efficient heat pump units.

Shirley - Portland, OR

Community Energy Project and Electrify Now have created the Electrify Everyone Fund to help qualified families to get a free Heat Pump Water Heater to replace their gas water heater and save them money on utility bills. “I feel climate change is a very serious issue and we are not doing a very good job of addressing it.  All the generations that come after us are going to suffer unless we get in there and really do something about it. People need to be able to do this without it being so costly, it has to be subsidized.”

Tom installed a Rheem Heat Pump water heater himself and experimented with the heating modes to see the effect on energy consumption using the included phone app. “The proof is really in the usage report. I ran it in Electric Only mode for May and June. I shifted to Hybrid (Heat Pump) mode in July and August. On straight electric - we used about 300 kWh a month to heat our water. In Hybrid mode, we used roughly 100 kWh. That is a significant dollar savings AND makes me feel like I'm not wasting energy. We love that we can put it in High Demand mode when the kids are visiting but mostly we will use the Hybrid setting.”

Linda - Portland, OR

Linda qualified for a free Heat Pump Water Heater through the Electrify Everyone program with Community Energy Project. “I am trying to do more things to save the earth, and I thought natural gas did, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that wasn’t the case. It’s one less thing on my gas bill and I expect lower costs because it’s so efficient”

Holly - Bennington College, VT

“We replaced old water heaters with new electric heat pumps in twenty buildings on campus and expect this will help us to avoid over 34 Tons of CO2e per year and save nearly $12,000 per year in operating costs. Its a win win and a huge step toward getting our campus to carbon neutral! Thanks for the help Electrify Now!”

“We purchased the house over the summer and have been making improvements to efficiency, indoor air quality, and carbon emissions. As opportunities arise we are choosing efficient electric options, have enrolled in the the green power option, and are enrolled in a future community solar project! The HPWH project was a great place to start and we took advantage of great incentives and were able to replace an aging gas water heater with a top of the line Heat Pump! It totally keeps up with our 4 person household.”

“We installed a 90 gallon heat pump water heater which supplies two rental units with plenty of hot water efficiently and in a cost effective manner.  It’s a win, win!”

Adam and Brigit - Beaverton, OR

“We replaced a natural gas water heater with a Rheem Heat Pump water heater. The old water heater is not even a legal product in Canada due to carbon monoxide concerns, so we were happy to replace it. Even happier to replace it with the Rheem product due to its efficiency and ability to function in differing modes throughout the day that we can cater to our needs.”

“We replaced a 10 year old high efficiency natural gas power vent water heater with a Rheem Prestige Hybrid water heater. The new one is quieter and gives us plenty of hot water. We use it on Heat Pump mode and it works great even when we have a house full of people. The energy guide label on the old unit said it would cost $281 per year to operate and this one says $110.”

“We were going to install two gas hot water heaters in our house and ADU, but decided instead to go for more energy efficient electric heat pump water heaters. These are in a basement room that is now cool enough to store wine and nice and dry.  Going all electric was very easy and an affordable alternative to gas.”

“For our new net-zero energy home, we chose a Rheem “Prestige” heat pump hot water heater, which uses significantly less electricity to produce plenty of hot water for our daily needs.  The unit has several settings that allow you to customize its efficiency vs. the amount of hot water typically needed, which can save even more energy!”

Dale - Marin, CA

"A few years ago we replaced a gas water heater with a heat pump water heater.   Since that was the last gas appliance in the house we were able to have the utility remove the gas meter and cap the gas line."
